Uncertainty throws us for a loop - we prefer to be creatures of habit. COVID-19 has changed daily life. For now, we don’t know what to expect. All we can do is have a plan to manage stress and focus on what’s in our control.
Self care plan:
Daily structure - create a schedule for kids and adults.
Get outside into nature daily. Walks and outside runs are still allowed (six feet distance if needed).
Find new self care routines. Spending weeks sheltered in place is an abrupt life transition.
Maintain a realistic perspective. Challenge unhelpful or catastrophic thoughts. Reality test as needed.
Increase self supportive statements. This is a hard time. We will get through this.
Reduce compulsive checking of news feeds.
Practice deep breathing to ground and center yourself.
Exercise and stretch daily. Both are great for stress reduction.
Express your emotions and thoughts. Journal, paint or text a friend regularly about your inner experience.
Read fiction.
Be direct with partners re household responsibilities, gender roles, and working from home.
Find ways to connect (in your household, via video or text). Personal relationships are meaningful distractions and can help us to maintain perspective.
Imagine your future self reflecting back on this time. How would you like to make sense of how you handled things? Can you do anything now to positively influence that outcome?
If you have children, think of their experience. How can you help them make sense of this sudden change in a meaningful way and manage safety with fun and connection.
For parents, be realistic about balancing child, work and household responsibilities. You cannot do it all like you did with childcare and school in session.
Find compassion: for ourselves, those suffering, medical staff, and humanity.
